Biography

It will be only the second visit to Badminton for American Olympic rider Boyd Martin (44) who last competed here in 2016. In 2023 with Badminton entries Tsetserleg TSF and On Cue Boyd completed Burghley 9th & 10th. Tsetserleg won the 4*s in Bromont and completed Luhmuhlen 5*L. The combination was a member of the silver medal team at the 2022 world championship in Pratoni and was the individual gold medal winner at the 2019 Pan Am Games. In 2021 On Cue won the 5* at Elkton (Maryland) and completed Lexington in 4th place. He is currently #3 in the FEI world rider ranking.

In 2012 Boyd contested his first Olympic Games and subsequently competed in the 2016 and 2020 Games in Rio and Tokyo.  He has also competed in four world championships, 2010, 2014, 2018 and 2022.

Boyd was born in Australia where he trained with Heath and Rozzie Ryan. He represented Australia at Young rider level in Trans- Tasman competition. The highlight of his Australian career was winning the last, long-format three-day at Adelaide with True Blue. He was long-listed for the Australian Olympic team in 2000, 2004 and 2008. In 2007 he relocated to the United States to pursue his eventing career and officially first represented the USA in 2009. He worked as assistant to Philip Dutton for two years before setting up his own yard.

In 2011 Boyd suffered a devastating fire at the barn. He lost six horses in the fire – his top ride Neville Bardos suffered serious effects of smoke inhalation. Later that year both competed at Burghley – finishing in 7th place – and Neville Bardos was named 2011 ‘horse of the year’ by USEF and The Chronicle of the Horse named Boyd ‘overall rider of the year’, an accolade he was again awarded in 2014.

In 2014 while schooling a horse Silva sustained a serious head injury – despite wearing a helmet – which affected her speech eyesight and physical capabilities but made a comeback to riding later in the year. In the same month Silva had her accident Boyd broke his leg in a fall.

Boyd and his wife Silva, a Grand Prix dressage rider originally from Germany who now rides for the USA, operate their training and competition yard Windurra USA, based in Cochranville  Pennsylvania. The couple has three young sons.
