Biography
It will be the sixth visit to Badminton for Irish Olympic rider Clare Abbott (35) who last competed here in 2019 with Euro Prince gaining her fourth completion and best result (12th).
In 2021, with Badminton entry Jewelent, Clare who is from Co Down, was the best of the Irish team at the European championships (14th) and the pair was the winner of the CCI4*S at Mallow.
Clare comes from an equestrian family. In 2007 Clare represented Ireland at the Young Rider European Championships at Blair Castle and in 2013 gained her first place on the Irish senior squad when called up for the European Championships to replace Aoife Clark (Master Crusoe). In 2016 With Euro Prince she was a member of the Irish team for the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.
Clare specialises in producing young horses and in 2013 she won both five and six-year-old Irish Sport Horse eventing series leagues; the six year old with Cormac McKay’s Oakley (Beachball-Runton), the five-year-old with John Melvin’s Glenkeeran River (Crosstown Dancer [ID]-Snurge XX) who since won the Camphire CIC2* as a seven-year-old.
With Euro Prince, Clare completed her first Badminton in 2014 and then rode as an individual at the WEG in Caen. In 2015 the pair also completed Badminton and was 9th at Pau and gained its fourth Badminton completion in 2019.
Clare has been a part-time maths teacher teaching in secondary school. Her father and mother rode in showing and hunting her mother Catherine is the Chairperson of Eventing Ireland /Northern Region. Her sister Stephanie, who groomed for Clare at the OG, works with event horses in Australia.
Clare trains with Ian Woodhead and Gabriel Tunney. She enjoys holidaying, eating out and relaxing with friends albeit says ’there is not much free time when you are preppin’ for Badminton’.
Jewelent owned by Lisa Rosbotham and Barbara Allen is a 10-year-old Irish-bred, Irish Sport Horse registered gelding. Bred by his owner Woods Rosbotham, he is by the jumping sire Valent out of the thoroughbred mare Bellaney Jewel by leading sire Roselier. Bellaney Jewel was a winning point-to-pointer and winning national hunt mare racing over four seasons. Jewelent is her first sport horse foal. Oliver Townend rides the younger full-sister Cooley Rosalent (also bred by Woods Rosbotham) at 3* with who he was 2nd in the World Young Horse Championships in 2020 and last year won the CCI3*S at Burnham Market in 2021.
