Biography
It will be a first Badminton for American rider Tamra (Tamie) Smith (46) who is based in Murrieta, California. Last year with Badminton entry Mai Baum Tamie was 9th at Lexington 5*- a first at the level for Mai Baum – and the travelling reserve for the Tokyo Olympic Games.
With Mai Baum Tamie was a member of the U.S. Eventing Team that won gold at the 2019 Pan American Games in Lima. The pair went on to win the CCI4*-S at Twin Rivers 2019 before traveling to the Netherlands to compete as part of the U.S. team at the CCIO4*-L at Boekelo in October of that year. She was the 2020 USEF CCI3*-L Eventing National Champion with Elliot-V at Galway Downs.
Since 2005 she has run the training yard Next Level Eventing. Her daughter Kaylawna Smith-Cook also competes.
Mai Baum (formerly known as Lenz) is a 16-year-old German-bred gelding. He is by the Holstein Loredano 2 out of a mare by Leoni. He was produced for one season by part owner Alexandra Ahearn – Tamie took the ride in 2015. Out of his 24 FEI starts he has been out of the top 10 just five times and scored 10 wins – he was rarely beaten at 3* level. He is described by Tamie ‘as the horse of a lifetime’.
